MARCH & APRIL 2009 – It Is Written

Posted on: March 11, 2009

It Is WrittenIt’s refreshing to see the under dog arise from unfortunate or less than positive life circumstances. In the case of Slum Dog Millionaire we have a budget movie with a no-name cast filmed in a third world country. Against all odds it wins 8 Academy Awards. The reality of 3 orphans moving together through life barely surviving and having to evolve from some of the most horrific situations, obviously touches us all.  Life unfolds as it should though, with Jamal acquiring the necessary experiences he needs to win the Indian version of ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire’. Brilliantly produced, the cinematography and music are edited and weaved together, allowing this honest and good hearted soul to attract his desired lost love and live the life of his dreams. As the movie suggests, I believe “It Is Written”.

Jhonatan to the right, our Peruvian sponsor child, is likely looking for more happiness and comfort in his world. It is with great pleasure that Body Harmony Yoga donated over $1000 to his community in Peru, along with a personal gift for his 8th birthday. These funds were raised in part from the grade 7 class at Cove Cliff Elementary, along with the 51 Body Harmony students who participated in the Journey of Our Hearts. Of those students, 17 diligently spent at least 3 months doing their weekly 7 Renewal Practices this winter. Those names were entered in a draw and Janet McCormack won a FREE YEAR OF YOGA at the studio. Congratulations and thank you to all who participated!

Please take a moment to encourage the growth of our community by completing the 2009 Survey. There are karmic rewards and a Free Class Pass draw for your efforts if you enter prior to April 15th.  And since our group is finally off to Peru at the end of March, the next eNewsletter in May will update you with that Free Class Pass recipient and the adventures of our trip. Thank you for your support on this Spiritual Journey.

Wishing you peacefulness in a humbling time,

Lori & Staff at Body Harmony Yoga

Student of the Month

Student of the MonthCongratulations Patrice Dixon. A super mom and full time language teacher at UBC, Patrice has somehow even managed to make time to tudor Lori in Spanish! In her thoughtful and quiet nature she says, “I am so glad that a friend recommended Body Harmony to me three years ago. Besides finding a wonderful studio to learn about and practice yoga, I have found a real community of people who practice life from the heart. The teachers and students here are a beautiful reminder that we are not just a body, and not just a mind, but mix of the two. I love learning about the different styles of yoga, and participating in the workshops and book club. Lori and her teachers have found the perfect yoga mix here, and I am not surprised by how much I have seen the studio grow over the last three years. It makes me happy to come to classes here. Thank you Body Harmony!”  Muchas gracias Patrice, nos encanta tu energia!

Kangen H20: Change Your Water, Change Your Life with Michele Labelle

Kangen H20: Change Your Water, Change Your Life with Michele LabelleOxygen and water are two things we cannot survive without! Our bodies are made up of between 65-85 % water and it is required to burn fat. We can go without food for days, but water only a few – that’s it. Chronic dehydration is a sign associated with many medical conditions today, for example constipation, headaches & bloating. Toxins build up with improper elimination causing many metabolic problems. Kangan water is hexagonal, micro-clustered, alkaline water. It tastes clean & fresh, like clear mountain water and has anti-oxidizing affects to keep you young, vital and healthy. Join us here to obtain FREE water and how bottled water may contain chemicals leached from plastic that mimic hormones and disrupt the endocrine system.

Green Tip – Dishwasher Tips

1. Sure, scrape food off your dish before you toss it in the dishwasher, but there’s no need for all this crazy double-washing business. If your dishwasher can’t clean a layer of gray off your plate, you need a new dishwasher.

2. If you have an air-dry button, use it: your dishes will dry just as well without a blast of heat (and you’ll use 20% less energy overall). It just takes a little longer. If your machine doesn’t have an air-dry option, no biggie-just open the door after the final rinse.

3. Start your dishwasher only when it’s FULL. No wasteful half-loads!

FEBRUARY VIEWS 2009 – Heart Month

Posted on: February 11, 2009

Heart MonthLife is interesting. We have the opportunity as human beings to expand our knowledge and awareness in so many ways. We can read books, watch movies, listen to music and communicate with technology. We can connect with animals, learn from the wise and travel to explore other cultures. Furthermore we have the ability to do all these things with love. To allow love into our experience brings a whole new dimension to life!

February is heart month and the heart is our vital organ to live and to love. If you started this year (or any) with good intentions but have somehow gone awry, redirect your efforts every chance you get. At Body Harmony we are on the last month of the Journey of Our Hearts – Seven Renewal Practices program, so even if you fell a little short of your personal goals or expectations, I encourage you to ‘get back on the horse’.

Finally, please share your love of yoga with others and forward the Valentines ‘2 for 1’ Special. Two new members each receive 10 Class Flexi Passes for the price of $140 plus tax ($70 each). This sale is on now until February 16th and applies to new members only. Share the love.

Have a happy heart month and give a hug today!

Namaste

Students of the Month

Students of the MonthCongratulations to Cheryl Todd and Dana Golden, the dynamic duo we are recognizing this month. As a personal trainer, Lori had the pleasure of working with Dana at Hollyburn Country Club years ago. When Body Harmony opened in 2003, Dana enthusiastically brought her sister Cheryl to yoga and they have been sharing yoga together ever since. Dana says, “Well, as I tell all my friends who ask what I do for fitness these days, I say I am dedicated to yoga for its amazing ability to enhance your emotional, mental and physical well-being. I am always surprised by how much I don’t know, and how every class is a lesson in itself. I love the solitary challenge of the practice in the midst of harmonized energy. I love the depth of concentration in a realm that has nothing (and everything) to do with our real lives. And I love how I walk taller and stronger after every class. That sense of well-being, the joy of fluid movement, and the calm peace of mind is why I will always come back.” Cheryl adds a personal note of gratitude to the studio by saying, “It has really been my privilege to practice with you over these last years. I love to start my week with one of your classes, as much for my mind as my body. And of course I love to finish the week with a class on Friday. You always go out of your way to make our practice interesting, be it with a new pose, a new Sanskrit word or a reading. And of course your loving energy is always surrounding us as we practice. I LOVE MY YOGA!!!!!” What a blessing to have these ladies with us all these years!

Green Tip – 4 Fabulous Coffee and Tea Tips

#1 Avoid bleached diposable coffee filters and buy unbleached reusable filters–or spend an extra buck or two on a gold filter that you can wash and reuse everyday.

#2 Buy a couple of portable mugs, one for work or school and one for the weekends about town, so you’re never without.

#3 Staying at the coffee shop? Ask for a ceramic mug rather than getting a takeout cup.

#4 Minimize your eco-footprint by buying in bulk. Brew that oolong in organic, fair-trade loose-leaf form instead of in bags.
