MARCH VIEWS 2010 – We Have a Dream!

Posted on: March 11, 2010

We Have a Dream!Vancouver, the lower mainland, Cypress Mountain and Whistler have all been doing a remarkable job of fulfilling the Olympic Dream of 2010! It is an additional bonus that Team Canada is pulling the country together with a wonderful sense of emotional pride. And with only a few more days of all this excitement and anticipation, we ask you intend to keep the vital energy and spirit of community alive. Let’s continue to volunteer and bring personal talents and strengths together, to help create a conscious community that aspires to help locally and globally. We begin by easily interconnecting friends and family with an accessible tool, the new Body Harmony Facebook Page. Join our group to network and aspire to thrive while making the world a better place.

If you need to balance out all the excitement with some quiet and comforting moments, you can always turn to our studio and community for support. This weekend, we have cancelled only two classes (Friday 4:30pm and 6pm) in light of the Olympic celebrations. Please read below for our workshops and special classes.

Go Canada! Go World!

Student of the Month

Student of the MonthCongratulations Bob Brough! A fellow North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce Member, Bob is an all around great ‘single guy and Investment Planner’ to have at Body Harmony. Bob says, “In a relatively short period of time, Body Harmony has become a significant part of my life, my personal journey of growth and development and my sense of peace and well being. From the ethereal Jen to the effervescent Lori, the instructors and staff offer a variety and responsive range of practices that I can match to my immediate needs and requirements of that day. My exploration of the connectivity between mind, heart and spirit continues and the noticeable improvements in flexibility and range of motion compliment my running, skiing and trail adventures. Most important of all is the ability of the studio to create an almost cocoon like environment of peace and tranquility within which I feel quite comfortable being present, relaxed and focused as I fumble my way through my practice. Thank you for recognizing me as March Student of the Month. The beauty and light within me recognizes and respects the beauty and light in each of you. Namaste.”

Intuitive Decision Making with Whitney McMillan

Intuitive Decision Making with Whitney McMillanHave you ever made a fantastic decision based on a ‘gut feeling?’ In this workshop, we will tap into intuition as the instinctive voice of your inner wisdom, your sense of knowing at a deep level without knowing why. When paired with our rational minds, intuition balances thinking and feeling in decision-making. It helps us to understand where we are ‘stuck’ and to reduce our confusion. Together, we will explore techniques to build your intuitive 6th sense and apply these skills to decision-making at home, at work, in relationships…with everything! Be empowered to listen to, trust and value your intuition.

Sacred Chant Concert with Snatam KaurConcert, chantfest, musical group meditation, a yoga class in melody, how best to describe a live performance by Snatam Kaur and her band? It’s all of these things and more. Crystalline and radiant, Snatam’s voice is redolent of the simple yet powerful truth of the heart.

Snatam’s divinely melodic songs based on traditional Sikh mantras are augmented by simple, heartfelt English verses that express the meanings these sacred syllables hold and help the audience forge their own emotional connection. Snatam is ably supported by devotional music stalwart GuruGanesha Singh, who handles the guitar with effortless grace, slipping easily between chordal rhythms and mellifluous leads.

Green Tip – Travelling Green

Green Tip - Travelling GreenGetting There:
Consider making your next flight “climate-neutral” by making a donation to an organization like the Better World Club. Your contribution will be used to help build renewable energy facilities, planting trees or any number of other projects that will cancel out the carbon dioxide produced by your flight.

Staying There:
When staying in a hotel, the laundering of sheets and towels consumes large amounts of energy, water, and detergent. Do your part by asking the hotel to change your linens and towels every other day.

While There:
Most destinations now provide a vast variety of sightseeing Eco-Tours which are designed to minimize your impact on the local population and environment.

FEBRUARY VIEWS 2010 – A World of Potential

Posted on: February 11, 2010

A World of PotentialWe look upon this February like no other. With earthquakes in Haiti, floods in Peru, and the Olympics in Vancouver, we see a world full of both adversity and contrast. It may be a challenge to see the oneness of humankind in such conditions, but we all have hearts consisting of the same energetic pathways, and our hearts go out to those in need.

As our city prepares for the inevitable changes this month, let’s look with optimism to potentially inspire and influence the world. Let’s show that the Best Place on Earth is not only beautiful, but that it’s generous and has spirit! I feel it’s not about gold medals, but rather it’s about being a city of greatness, with the power to motivate others to be the best they can be. Thus, smile at a stranger, open your home to a tourist, or perhaps offer assistance to someone in need. Please Celebrate the Possible and think about your role in this World Event that really is being hosted in our backyard.

On Friday February 19th at 7:30pm, we at Body Harmony are hosting the movie Enlighten Up! First RSVP, then join us ‘by donation at the door’ in order to raise money for the less fortunate children of Peru. The Journey of Our Hearts participants have already raised $980 with their dedication to the 7 Renewal Practices, but it is our hope to raise even more. All are welcome to come out and support the journey of our participants. Even if you cannot come, please give generously, as all donations will be graciously accepted on behalf of those in need (until February 19th).

Much Love & Happy Heart Month

Student of the Month

Student of the MonthCongratulations Hélène Day Fraser,  one of our busy and influential moms in the community! We love Hélène’s humble energy. She says, “I have been coming to Body Harmony for six years and I love yoga and the sense of calm I derive from it. Unfortunately, life’s fast pace often pulls me away from my practice — academic studies, work and family commitments sneak in and take priority. Body Harmony has afforded me the space to regroup and regain a sense of tranquility over and over again. Recently, after a particularly stressful year, I decided to make health and well-being a priority. I embarked on this goal with no clear picture of how it was to be attained beyond knowing I needed change. Then, at the end of a Monday morning Mixed Level Hatha Yoga class in early January, Lori introduced the Journey of our Hearts. I took up the challenge. Three weeks into it and I am walking around with a surprising sense of well-being that I would not trade for the world. Thank you to all for unwittingly acting as props — giving support to this 40 something girl who is re-learning how great it feels to be active, show tenderness and be happy! Namasté, Hélène.”

This class is designed just for the guys, so they can learn to stretch while using mind/body techniques in a fun and unintimidating space. Typically men experience more inflexibility in the hips, back and front of chest, thus we will effectively work those areas. This is an excellent way to learn how to make yoga more comfortable and beneficial in the regular drop in classes.

A Skeptics Journey into the World of Yoga

“Filmmaker Kate Churchill is determined to prove that yoga can transform anyone. Nick Rosen is skeptical but agrees to be her guinea pig. Kate immerses Nick in yoga and follows him around the world as he examines the good, the bad and the ugly of yoga. The two encounter celebrity yogis, true believers, kooks and world-renowned gurus. Tensions run high as Nick’s transformational progress lags and Kate’s plan crumbles. Ultimately, what they find is not what they were looking for.”

In preparation for a New Year, where most of us would be happy to cultivate more of our best selves, I invite you to consider the Journey of Our Hearts – 7 Renewal Practices. These practices are of general benefit to you and your health, and the $20 ‘by donation’ registration fee goes to help build a schoolhouse in Pisac, Peru. Intuitive Counselling with Whitney McMillan Every Tuesday

Intuitive Counselling with Whitney McMillan Every TuesdayDuring her 20 years in Social Work, Whitney utilized a variety of energy techniques as self-care to heal, ground and guide her journey. Trained in diverse healing modalities and counseling/coaching approaches, Whitney now merges these with her natural intuitive skills, offering one-to-one sessions individualized to meet each person’s needs. A range of separate services are available, including Reiki (energy healing), Life Coaching, Intuitive Readings and Environmental Cleansings.

Unique to Whitney’s practice is Inner Wisdom Mentoring(a merging of Guided Visualization, Chakra Balancing, Reiki, Life Coaching and Intuition Development), aimed to identify and release ‘stuck’ areas of a person’s life, so they can trust their intuition and move forward toward their desired goals and life purpose. In December, Whitney is offering 15-minute complimentary (FREE!) sample sessions of Inner Wisdom Mentoring, along with her other services and holiday gift certificates.

Whitney is available for sessions by appointment every Tuesday in the Wellness Space at Body Harmony. Contact Whitney directly at: 604.722.5402 or info@whitneymcmillan.com

Green Tips for Cooking

The holidays are a time for family, fun and FOOD! Click for some delicious vegetarian holiday recipes!

Here are 5 tips on how you can be more green in the kitchen this holiday season:

  1. Smaller is always better. (Think toaster oven over electric oven and hand held blender over food processor).
  2. Make sure to match pan size to the element size. A small pot on a large burner just wastes energy, and small burners use less energy.
  3. Keep your metal burners clean so they reflect heat better and cook faster.
  4. If you’re baking in ceramic or glass, you can reduce the oven temperature by 25˚F (20˚C) and still cook the food in the same amount of time (these materials conduct and retain heat better than metal).
  5. Curiosity kills your electric bills! Keep your oven door closed as much as possible while cooking. Peeking inside causes at least 20% of the heat to escape, and then the oven wastes energy warming itself up again.

NOVEMBER VIEWS 2009 – Falling Back into Good Yoga Etiquette

Posted on: November 11, 2009

Falling Back into Good Yoga EtiquetteThere is great awareness of the term ‘yoga’ in our society and it is growing! Curious viewers of TV programs and videos are hearing about yoga’s numerous benefits, but for some, the first step into a yoga studio can be intimidating. Even if friends, family and co-workers have raved about how much they love their local yoga classes, you never really know what to expect from the first experience. “Will I be able to follow with everyone? What will I wear? Will it be mystical or esoteric?” These are common questions, but need not be of concern. It is the nature of yoga to provide an overall experience of feeling better in your own skin, and at Body Harmony Yoga Studio we do our best to make everyone feel comfortable.

To continue enhancing the yoga experience for all our students, we wish to give a friendly reminder of some studio etiquette. (These tips can easily be forgotten when you feel so much at home in our space!)

  • Arrive to class 10 minutes early to allow time for setting up and settling in, as doors are locked at start time
  • Keep all conversations to a quiet whisper, so other yoga students can meditate
  • Stagger your mats to make space for your yourself and your yoga neighbours
  • Keep the floor clear for practice by leaving personal belongings in the change room and storage cabinet
  • Use bolsters and blankets only if you are wearing long pants and did not work up a sweat during class
  • At the end of class, greet your teacher and fellow yogi’s with the traditional ‘Namaste’ (Sanskrit term meaning ‘the light in me recognizes the light in you’)Invite your friends and family to explore the studio’s classes with the $99 Fall Special for 9 Weeks of Unlimited Yoga! It is for new members only, thus you are eligible for this special if you have never purchased a pass or have only had a 5 Class Pass. Student of the MonthCongratulations and Happy Birthday Suzanne Spencer! We are blessed by the open minded and light hearted nature Suzanne exudes. She shares, “My journey began before I knew I was about to take one. I started with a Power Yoga class, but it was recommended by a teacher that I try a gentle class to help me learn the postures. I did this and they kept me coming back again and again, as gentle words continued to guide me along my journey within. I can now enjoy a variety of classes, and I’d like to say many thanks to all the teachers for their inspiring words and encouraging movements. I love the way that the teachers share their beliefs, both on and off the mat. I appreciate their patience and guidance. For each day, each moment, each breath that I breathe, I am grateful. For every class I attend, I move my body and I am moved into a deeper place while making new friends and starting new beginnings. It is an honour to be Body Harmony’s student of the month for November, because this month is a turning point in my life as I turn 50. My dedication to yoga practice has allowed me to become a more flexible and stronger athlete, a calmer and more loving mother and wife, and a good friend to more and more people in our world. I know for certain now that yoga is my way of life, for it has shown me a greater life.”

Stay Healthy This Flu Season

How will you protect yourself this fall, with the added dangers this flu season presents? As yogis, we like to encourage our students to approach their health in a holistic way with an eye on prevention. In that tradition, we would like to give thanks to all of the students who have graciously stayed away from the studio while ill and encourage others to follow suit. Follow this link to find 10 more tips to help you prevent the Swine Flu this season.

Finish Your Week with a Traditional Hawaiian Massage

Finish Your Week with a Traditional Hawaiian MassageCandace feels a strong connection to the Hawaiian culture and way of life, and has furthered her studies in the traditional Hawaiian form of massage, called Lomilomi. This ancient custom of holistic healing involves long, rhythmic strokes, using the forearm and hands. Lomilomi has been described as “a connection of heart, hands and soul with the source of all life”.

She has been a student of Body Harmony for many years, and is excited to have the opportunity to share a “peace of paradise” with other students of yoga because massage therapy plays an important role in balancing the mind, body and spirit. Candace is a Certified Massage Therapist with her basic massage training in Hawaii at Maui School of Therapeutic Massage.  She completed her Lomilomi Level 1, Level 2, and Ili ili (Hawaiian Hot Stone Therapy) at Hale Ho’omana on the island of Maui. Candace is available for treatments by appointment  every Friday at Body Harmony.

Body Harmony Book Club

Body Harmony Book ClubThe Red Tent is a novel by Anita Diamant, published in 1997. It is a first-person narrative story, giving voice to Dinah of The Bible (daughter of Jacob and sister of Joseph, a talented midwife and proto-feminist). The book’s title refers to the tent in which women of Jacob’s tribe must, according to the ancient law, take refuge while menstruating or giving birth, and in which they find mutual support and encouragement from their mothers, sisters and aunts. According to the Los Angeles Times review, “By giving a voice to Dinah, one of the silent female characters in Genesis, the novel has struck a chord with women who may have felt left out of biblical history. It celebrates mothers and daughters and the mysteries of the life cycle.” You are welcome to join our small group for a fascinating discussion on Wednesday November 4th at 7pm . Please contact our host Vera Gibson to RSVP.

OCTOBER VIEWS 2009 – Taking Care of Busyness

Posted on: October 11, 2009

Taking Care of Busyness With the invevitable change of season, we ourselves are best to allow for change. Recently a colleague in the fitness industry confessed, “Once my life gets in order, I’m going to yoga.” It was evident that even the mention of yoga brought him a feeling of relief. I smiled, “come to yoga and everything will fall into place.” It made him think.

Those of us who include yoga in our routines already know that regular practice enhances life and makes everything flow more easily. While there will always be something to do, it is essestial to add time for ourselves to that never ending list. Yoga practice reminds us of the importance of quiet time and introspection. Surrendering to the calmness and serenity of yoga, will bring flow into the rest of our lives, making that list seem a little more manageable.

To celebrate Thanksgiving, we at Body Harmony want to show appreciation for our loyal students by continuing to reward them with the best prices on the North Shore. If you haven’t been to the studio in a while (and perhaps were waiting for a deal) wait no longer! This Free Class Pass  will give you the opportunity to get on track with yoga and receive discounted passes. (Please Note: 9 Week Specials that come up are for NEW MEMBERS ONLY, which means students who have never had a pass at the studio). We hope you appreciate the value, service and experience we offer at Body Harmony and look forward to seeing you soon.

Happy Thanksgiving

Lori

btw, see the schedule for a new early morning class on Tuesdays at 6:30am, a new beginner yoga course on Thursdays at 11am (starting October 1st) and also the thanksgiving long weekend classes!

Student of the Month

Student of the MonthI love when Vera Gibson shares her ‘yoga experiences’ after class – they give the goose bumps! Our energetic and yoga commited Vera says, “I have been practicing yoga on and off for over 30 years in various locations with many different teachers. However, it wasn’t until I discovered Body Harmony a few years ago that I experienced all the layers that yoga can be. On a physical level, it is the counterpoint to many of the other physical activities I enjoy during a week, improving my flexibility and strengthening my body. On a spiritual level, it gives me an another opportunity to connect with all that is, and works on keeping my chakras clear, which in turn enables my intuitive abilities to stay strong. On an emotional level, it connects me with a community of wonderful people and as a result, I have made great friendships. On a mental level, I have learned much during various events including slide shows, book clubs and more. Lori, you and Body Harmony are always on my gratitude list – I am so grateful to have such a supportive and loving space, filled with powerful energy, where I can go to enjoy my yoga practice.” Thank you Vera!

SEPTEMBER VIEWS 2009 – Enlighten Up!

Posted on: September 11, 2009

Enlighten Up!What IS yoga, really? Every person you talk to will likely have a different story. This makes sense for many reasons. There are a variety of styles of yoga, numerous personalites of teachers, copius ranges of environments of which to practice and essentially, uncounted personal preferences for why one would want to try. So imagine the diversity of answers? Actually, even if you had the same person, attending the same weekly class, with the same teacher consistently at the same studio, their experiences would change. As there are many physical, mental and emotional benefits to the practice (most everyone would agree), I suggest exploring yoga and what it can do for you on your own! You just won’t know how much you’ll grow, until you go and continue to experience yoga for yourself.

On September 20th, we have a lovely experiential gathering as part of a world wide Global Mala Event. RSVP and share our experience of peace and joy through yoga and chanting with Jeffrey Armstrong, that Sunday from 10:30am to 12pm. We welcome you to uplift your spirits and learn more about what it feels like to be in an energetic community! The $20 per person proceeds go to the Pennies for Peace foundation.

If you wish to continue collecting data about other perceptions of yoga (or just wanna be entertained) there is a fun first run documentary called Enlighten Up! Starting September 4th, take your yogic friends, non-yogic family or skeptical partner to enjoy some laughs about a 29 year old male journalist who whole-heartedly gives yoga an unbiased chance.

Have a fantastic Labor Day weekend and please read the studio schedule to find a class that suits you. We’re excited about the fall programs and look forward to seeing you back at Body Harmony soon!

Blessings, Love & Light

Student of the Month

Student of the MonthCongratulations Sharon Dives! A pleasant and lovely soul to have around, Sharon says, “Body Harmony is an oasis of calm for me. On the first day I walked into the studio in the Fall of 2006, I got a feeling of ease, a feeling like I had come home. And still to this day, even as I drive toward the studio to class, a sense of peacefulness and joy starts to come over me. Sometimes I still bring stresses and judgements into the studio with me, but that’s where the yoga and meditation take over — these help me to ‘release the things that no longer serve me’. The staff and teachers are, dare I say, perfect for me! They are gentle and welcoming souls. Every teacher has their own style and way of explaining the postures and meditation and the spiritual journey, well, the ‘yogic’ way. The lessons mingle and merge with my own philosophical and spiritual understanding to help me to live in the moment and to find my way through life in this material world. Thank you Body Harmony, for being here (and now).”

Green Tip – Simple Packaging For Less Garbage

Buy products that don’t come with any packaging!Know your numbers. If you’re buying something that comes in plastic, check the bottom for numbers(1, 2, 4 & 5 are to be included in the North Shore recycle program and are not accepted as regular disposal)

Renewable and recyclable glass is at the head of the class since you’re guaranteed it won’t leach into your food or drinks.Buy dry. If you’re picking up an ingredient such as chicken broth, the powdered kind goes a lot further than a can of water-filled broth, which gets used up in one meal.Buy in bulk. Even consider bringing your own container for filling.Good things come in small packages. For instance, cereals that come in smaller boxes often contain the same amount of, say, muesli, as the bigger boxes, which are just full of air. Compare product weights to be sure.Keep an eye out for biodegradable corn-based plastic food packaging.

SUMMER VIEWS 2009 – The OM Connection

Posted on: July 11, 2009

The OM ConnectionWith the solstice now behind us, it means a change of schedule for many and the possibility to find OM in all that we do this sOMmer. OM, sometimes spelt AUM, is a primordial sound referring to the ‘oneness’ of all things. It is the universal sound of creation, or the pulse of the cosmos itself. Its vibration and frequency shape and organize energy in such a way, as to cause atoms to move and grow together, manifesting ‘wholeness’. When practicing yoga, we chant OM to send these powerful vibrations through the deepest parts of the body, helping cleanse and relax our organs and cells. OM sounds and feels like hOMe, the most comforting place to be.

With the summer $99 unlimited yoga sale extended until the end of June, yoga is is one of those very affordable options for total connection to OM. If you like to walk and hike, stop to listen to the sound of OM in the rustling of the flowers and the bees. If you run or bike, listen for it within the leaves of the trees. When swimming, canoeing or kayaking, you can hear its sound in the water and the waves. If you must be on the computer, perhaps try ConcentratiOM with Rodney Yee!

Have a fabulous summer and enjoy the Canada Day week ahead. The studio is closed on July 1st this year, so please check the website for long weekend schedules before attending class. We look forward to your presence for Yoga By The Beach, the Camp Moomba Yogathon and Mom & Baby Yoga as suggested below.

Namaste,

Student of the Month

Student of the MonthDuncan Wells is our Student of the Summer. A fun and lively spirit to have at the studio, Duncan says, “I have been practicing yoga at Body Harmony for almost three years now, and have to admit to starting for some selfish reasons (like attending for a good workout). Yoga is so much more. The union of the spirit, the psyche and the physical. Yoga has helped me to understand myself, the universe, our places in it and that we and everything are all connected. The family at Body Harmony (staff, instructors and students) along with the fantastic atmosphere and friendships created, are just part of the reason for my practicing here. Thank you everyone for being a part of this incredible experience. Namaste.”

Student of the Month

Student of the MonthCongratulations Wendy Rohrwasser! Her consistently quiet presence and strong yogic practice are just two of the reasons for choosing her as June’s Student of the Month. Wendy says, “Since joining Body Harmony over 2 years ago, I have noticed a great improvement in my stature and flexibility and has taught me to release the tension I often hold in my shoulders and neck throughout my day. Yoga here has become my indulgence; the thing that I do just for myself. And I am disappointed on the days that I have to miss my class. The teachers are encouraging and thoughtful in their guidance through their classes and I appreciate their effort in developing flows that challenge both our minds and our bodies. My practice at Body Harmony has become an integral part of trying to maintain a healthy, positive lifestyle and I am very grateful to have Lori and her studio there to support me.”

MAY VIEWS 2009 – A Cause for Community

Posted on: May 11, 2009

A Cause for CommunityInternational travel alters the people who experience it. What happens then, when a group of like minded souls take on a Spiritual Journey to Peru? Well, I seriously contemplated this shortly after parting with the group, nearly three weeks ago today. And as I sat on a balcony overlooking the bustling and vibrant Pisac market in the Sacred Valley, I began to see the largest lesson of our journey together. Personally, it came during a ceremony when I clearly felt the presence of love in our circle and was reminded of the fundamental importance of such spirit of community. Throughout the trip, the energies of love and laughter were easily recognized amongst us. The random acts of kindness, respect, sharing and other signs of connection, brought our little Canadian body harmony yoga team closer together and it even enhanced the environment around us. We saw things positively and made a success of the journey, and have brought back a collective consciousness with a greater feeling of community. We very much need the spirit of community in such times, thus we look forward to connecting with everyone soon. Join us for Customer Appreciation and time together on Friday June 5th  at 6:30pm, when we will share pictures, stories, music and over all good vibes. All are welcome! In the meantime, enjoy the spring and have a glorious Mother’s Day weekend with your family, friends and neighbours.

Much Love & Blessings,

Lori

PS, Thank you to all who participated in the Spring Survey 2009 and congratulations to Sarah Fischer, who won the FREE 10 Class Pass this time around!

Student of the Month

Student of the MonthCongratulations to Joanne Cant! Joanne celebrated a milestone birthday recently and thankfully chose to bring her great energy on our trip to Peru. A gracious travelling companion, our ‘Shimmering Butterfly’ brought with her a wonderful attitude and ease of speech for the Spanish language, making the holiday more enjoyable for the entire group. About Body Harmony, Joanne says, “I was looking for a yoga studio, a community to become a part of. Three years ago I walked through the doors of BHYS and knew this was the place that would become a big part of my life. Not only is it a beautiful space to come and stretch my body, I have also found that it is a place to let go of my mind! When I heard about the trip Lori was planning to Peru, I knew instantly that I had to find a way to go. Machu Picchu was on my list. Sometimes you don’t know why, or how, but you just have to go. So I signed up at the end of August. It was an amazing trip. We started off as a group of strangers, but within a short time we were true friends and companions. Machu Picchu was the destination, but like all great adventures in life, it turned out that it was the journey that meant the most!”
