FEBRUARY VIEWS 2011 – Life Force Energy

Posted on: February 11, 2011

Life Force EnergyAs I write this, the anticipation is building about the birthing process of my first child. Time and again I remind students about the power of our breath and all that it holds. What a great reminder for myself! Our hearts pump oxygen from the breath through the blood in our bodies, but along with this movement of oxygen to each and every cell, comes the flow of Prana. All science aside, Prana is a yogic vital source of energy that is life-sustaining, much like chi or ki from other traditions. Prana is the Sanskrit term for Life Force Energy and I like to consider the conscious use of it as a spiritual way to energize oneself.

Living ‘one day at a time’ is a great way to cope when life feels complicated or overwhelming. However better yet, living ‘one breath at a time’ helps us stay truly in the moment and gets us through things that are seemingly impossible! Let’s all remember the power of our breath more often, and draw in the valuable life force energy that comes with each cycle. When we are born into this world, the first thing we do is ‘inhale’. When we expire and exit into the next world, the last thing we do is ‘exhale’.

Be with the life force and do this with me, BREATHE

OM Shanti

Student of the Month

Student of the MonthCongratulations Lorraine Bennett ! Especially over this past year, Lorraine has been a blessing to the studio with her helpful hints and great networking ability. What she says about us, “When I first walked in the door at Body Harmony three years ago, my situation was urgent. In my mid-50s, I was a “former runner”, stressed, out of shape, desperate for a means to recover lost strength and flexibility and a path to peace of mind. In the early days, so poor was my condition that I couldn’t hold my core body up in a seated position for more than a few seconds and the tension in my back prevented me from relaxing my back flat to the floor!

I’m happy to say that today I’m a devotee of yoga! It has restored much needed strength and flexibility, calmed my mind and body. It has given me skills directly applicable in other personal domains like scuba-diving – a sport I’ve come to late in mid-life. Yoga has given me the combined focus, relaxation and efficient breathing necessary to dive safely and comfortably.

I’m hugely grateful to Lori for her spiritual goodness and her technical skill, for creating an oasis of truly mindful yoga, and to the instructors and all the participants in the Body Harmony community for sharing ‘the peace’. Namaste.”

Green Tip

Green TipThe next time you’re at home enjoying a movie or your favourite TV show, skip the chips and reach for a bowl of Edamame instead. Eda-wha?

Edamame, which means “beans on branches”,are little pods full of tasty goodness. It’s an excellent low-calorie source of protein – including all 9 essential amino acids that the body cannot produce itself. It’s high in fibre, which keeps you feeling full longer and aids in digestion. The isoflavones supports a healthy heart and helps to maintain bone-density. Did I mention it’s full of folate and vitamin K as well? Both help to keep the heart healthy. Yes, there are some who caution against consuming too many soy-based products, however, as with all foods, moderation is key to a balanced diet – snacks included.

Edamame beans are delicious simply steamed, or you can get creative and sprinkle a little sea salt, pepper, cayenne??? If you have a fabulous recipe that incorporates edamame, let us know – post it either on Facebook or the BHYS blog.

Edamame beans are a great alternative to that TV, mid-day or even late-night snack. Bon appetit!

DECEMBER VIEWS 2010 – A Season for Simplicity

Posted on: December 11, 2010

December Views - A Season for SimplicityThis is the year of La Nina and ‘Tis the Season of winter that brings an uncertainty of weather. The perception of La Nina is that it will bring more of the white stuff, and that is very exciting for some! But for others, it may be more comforting to know that 3 of the last 5 La Nina winters have been warmer than predicted.

Regardless what the weather brings, choose to embrace the holiday season and slow down in these winter months. Although it may not be easy, slowing down the hustle and bustle will bring more simplicity and joy to our lives. Make time to go outside and breathe the fresh air with family and friends, or perhaps find quality time with them in one of our yoga classes. Inhale with ‘simplicity’ and exhale with ‘serenity’. It’s the best thing for us all, leading us calmly into an inviting new year!

Happy Holidays,

NOVEMBER VIEWS 2010 – A Growing Awareness

Posted on: November 11, 2010

A Growing AwarenessEntering the third trimester of pregnancy will make the next few months “the last of life as I know it”. As expected though, this growing experience has brought such wonderful connections with other prenatals, new moms and their babies, along with moms I’ve known for years. The North Shore is absolutely blessed with a community that cares, shares, recycles and gives resources which help build this sense of connection. And since we are so fortunate to have the availability of care that we do, I feel the need to retract a rather general and disapproving statement I made about the medical system the other day!

Truth be told, our Canadian medical system and its technology are quite excellent. A note of interest is that the Medical Services Plan of British Columbia gives most prenatals timely ultrasounds and free access to midwifery care, which can offer a real sense of emotional relief during pregnancy. Perhaps take in this recent article from a local paper that expands on midwifery and that of home birthing, bringing greater awareness to how rewarding this experience can be. Regardless whether one chooses to experience a home birth or hospital birth with a midwife, or a hospital birth with a physician, it is a true privilege to have the support of these professionals.

In addition to the professional care, personal care and nesting I have in store for the up and coming winter months, I plan to nurture the family with some of our favorite retreat recipes. Enjoy these delicious vegetarian dishes and visit the BLOG again soon for more from our latest retreat.

Please forward this newsletter to anyone who may be interested, sharing the news of our Fall Serendipity Sale on now until November 15th/10. $99 for 9 Weeks of Unlimited Yoga for regular classes is a great deal that works well for prenatals and all new students to Body Harmony.

Count your blessings and have a safe and happy month ahead.

Namaste

Intuitive Decision Making with Whitney McMillan

Intuitive Decision Making with Whitney McMillanHave you ever made a fantastic decision based on a ‘gut feeling?’ In this workshop, we will tap into intuition as the instinctive voice of your inner wisdom, your sense of knowing at a deep level without knowing why. When paired with our rational minds, intuition balances thinking and feeling in decision-making. It helps us to understand where we are ‘stuck’ and to reduce our confusion. Together, we will explore techniques to build your intuitive 6th sense and apply these skills to decision-making at home, at work, in relationships…with everything! Dr. Wayne Dyer – The Shift ~ Moving from Ambition to Meaning

Dr. Wayne Dyer - The Shift ~ Moving from Ambition to MeaningDr. Wayne Dyer brings his latest work to Vancouver’s Queen Elizabeth Theatre on Tuesday, November 23rd. Use special promotional code SHIFT at www.ticketmaster.ca and save 20%!

How do we make The Shift and bring true purpose and happiness to our lives? The Shift doesn’t mean that we lose our drive and ambition; it signifies that we become ambitious about something new. We make a commitment to living a life based on experiencing meaning and feeling purposeful, rather than a life based on never-ending demands and false promises that are the trademark of the ego’s agenda.

As we contemplate leaving the morning of our life, where ego has played a commanding role, and entering the afternoon (and evening), where meaning and purpose replace ambition and struggle, we may encounter unexpected occurrences that accompany this new direction. It’s almost a universal law that we’ll experience a fall of some kind. Yet these falls or low points provide the energy we need to move away from ego and into a life of meaning and purpose.

The Earth Prayer

The Earth PrayerEarth, upon which this moving, breathing life exists,
May she bestow on us the finest of her harvests
Earth, the all-sustaining, treasure-bearing, resting place
Golden-breasted Earth, home of all life,
Who bears the sacred fire.

Pleasant by thy hills, O Earth,
Thy snow-clad mountains and thy forests.
On this Earth do I stand,
unvanquished, unslain, unhurt.
Set me, O Earth amidst the nourishing strength
that emanates from thy body.

The Earth is my mother, Her son or daughter am I
Infinite Space is my father, May he fill us with plenty.
Peaceful, sweet-smelling, gracious Earth,
Whatever I dig from thee, O earth,
May that have quick growth again,

May we not injure your vitals or your heart.
Full of sweetness are the plants,
And full of sweetness these my words
And with things that are full of sweetness,
I prosper in a thousand ways.

~From The Atharva Veda

OCTOBER VIEWS 2010 – Family Virtues

Posted on: October 11, 2010

Family Virtues‘Patience is a virtue,’ my grandmother always used to say. As a young girl, the concept of a virtue was often difficult to understand. Now as an adult, I find it is the patience aspect of this phrase that has me more perplexed! Why is it that being patient with family is often the most challenging practice of all? Through yoga, I have explored that question time and again over the last eight years.

Working closely with my mother (Ellen) at the studio, I have learned a lot about myself, relationships, and patience, to fortunately find that we have grown together. This month however, we are making a transition to explore a different kind of family caring. Although I will miss her and her peaceful presence at the studio, we are looking forward to having a more usual mother and daughter relationship.

With Thanksgiving approaching, it’s a great time to cultivate more awareness of the virtues you may be challenged with. To initiate these types of reflections and meditations, regular yoga attendance will help. Meet our lovely team of teachers at the studio, or perhaps take in our Fall Yoga Retreat & Cleanse October 14th to 17th.

Have a loving Thanksgiving weekend, and we look forward to serving you soon.

With gratitude,

Lori Charko

btw, this is a big public THANK YOU to my mama for all her love and support over the years!

Students of the Month

Students of the MonthThis month’s honorable mention goes to Joani Bye and Mike Battie. Congratulations you two! It’s so inspiring for us to see couples and families coming into the studio together. Joani says, “Mike started practicing yoga to balance out his physical job as a juggler, then convinced me to come to Body Harmony with him. That was almost three years ago, and we’ve been going several times a week ever since.

As avid tennis players, we find the stretch and strengthening yoga offers extremely beneficial, but we also love the breathing and meditational portion of the practice and find that it helps with focus and relaxation not only on the tennis court, but in all aspects of everyday life.

The instruction is consistently high quality, and each instructor brings a different approach to the class, which keeps it fresh and interesting.

We love the feeling of the studio itself – as soon as you walk in, there’s a calm, peaceful atmosphere. We enjoy it from the warm welcome at the front desk to the Namaste at the end of class. Thanks, Body Harmony!!”

It’s almost a universal law that we’ll experience a fall of some kind. Yet these falls or low points provide the energy we need to move away from ego and into a life of meaning and purpose.

Green Tip

Green TipNot only is brown rice better for you than white, it’s more environmentally friendly too!To create white rice, the germ and the inner husk (bran) is removed; the grain is then polished, usually using glucose or talc. So not only are you adding more processes and chemicals, but you’re loosing out on the most nutritious part of the grain!

The crazy thing is that these added steps to turn brown rice to white remove nutrients that are sometimes then introduced back in via synthetic sources – this is called fortified white rice. The same type of thing happens in brown bread vs. white bread scenario.

The loss of nutrients is broad and substantial with white rice having a lot less Vitamin E, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Vitamin B6, Folacin, Potassium, Magnesium, Iron and over dozen other nutrients. Plus, white rice has about a quarter of the dietary fibre as brown.

So do both yourself and the environment a favor and make the switch!

SEPTEMBER VIEWS 2010 – A Time for Change

Posted on: September 11, 2010

A Time for ChangeEnergetically, there is a feeling and onset of change here on the West Coast. In September, students go back to school, schedules shift, and there can be a sudden chill in the air that comes with the autumn changing of the trees. The parks are noticeably more quiet, fruit stands close and Yoga by the Beach wraps up for another year.

In our family, we are welcoming the fall with yet another big adjustment. The anticipation of a little baby girl this January, means big life changes for my husband and I! Now, years of intention and preparation bring us to this amazing place…an exciting and sometimes scary place of unknowns. But here we go! We’re working together to continually balance families, careers and all the things that are most dear to us.

Body Harmony Yoga has already visibly established the addition of a talented Administration Assistant and teacher (Shaina Trumble), as well as four new experienced teachers to the schedule (Kari Winfield, Sarah Harrison, Catherine Wang and Loretta Dugaro). This season, we have also added some different and exciting Wellness Workshops and classes. So please peruse the website and take a moment to book a session which will naturally move you towards growth and change.

Enjoy the Labor Day weekend and check the schedule for any class cancellations before attending. We look forward to seeing you and having everyone back this fall!

Blessings,

Lori, Shaina, Ellen & Teachers at Body Harmony

Student of the Month

Student of the MonthCongratulations Allan Gauthier! Allan decided to challenge himself this summer by coming to 30 classes in 30 days, and he succeeded! Allan explains his yoga experience…

“My yoga journey started last summer. I was hoping that the stretching would help out my marathon running. After two months, I surprised myself by taking a full 10 minutes off my previous best time when I ran the Victoria marathon in October.

I returned to yoga again in June due to an injury, but something different happened. I found that each class would be better than the last. I started to understand what it meant to “breathe into your hips, or breathe into your lower back”, and it felt great to do that. To quote one of the instructors, I am now learning to “cultivate my intention” during the whole class.

Every single class is different here. Even if go to the same instructor, you will be taught new stretches, breathing techniques and strength routines. As a beginner, I am very pleased that the instructors will carefully guide me into the proper position for new poses, as well as correct my posture, to ensure I don’t feel any pain, and to maximize the benefits of the various poses. I am just beginning to understand the yoga journey is a very long road to travel, and it may take years and years to reach a destination….at least I’m hoping it will take that long!”

Green Tips

Green TipsWhen you’re going through a particularly stressful or anxious time, pampering yourself is an amazing way to bring more joy and peaceinto your life. By using pure and natural ingredients in your home spa treatments, you will decrease the amount of chemicals in your life and you increase your sense of calm and serenity!

Add sea salt, seaweed or algae products to your bath. These will stimulate blood circulation, help your body excrete toxins and tone your skin.

Use lavender, eucalyptus, rose, lemon, or tea tree pure essential oils in a steam shower. These scents help to calm your nerves.

Apply mud or seaweed to your skin to draw out any impurities and hydrate your skin.

Create a natural scub with a mixture of olive oil and salt or sugar to remove dead skin. Gentle exfoliation will give your skin a glow, and you will also be able to enjoy the massaging aspect of the therapy too.

Massage your feet and hands with a calming essential oil such as lavender, melissa, chamomile or rose. You might be surprised how many sore spots you have on your hands and feet.

SUMMER VIEWS 2010 – How Does Your Garden Grow?

Posted on: July 11, 2010

Summer Views - How Does Your Garden Grow?Canadians everywhere are wondering about our summer weather! It’s worth considering that the conditions we have may not be completely beyond our control. One thing is for sure, taking on an attitude of reciprocity with Mother Earth would at least bring a shift within our selves. When there is a balance of giving and receiving of all things, life is in harmony and there is growth. We as humans can be thought of as mediums, who absorb nutrients from the ground beneath us, and then have a choice as how to use the nourishment we receive when extending our physical energy. This attitude of gratitude and exchange with oceans, forests and gardens would also shift our external environment. If we then gave back and nurtured the world with love, seeds and positive intentions, would we not see a healthier environment that could potentially be sustained?

Enjoy the fresh outdoors this Canada Day, and remember to contemplate how you can give back to our lushes West Coast! Please note there is no Yoga by the Beach on July 1st, but we do have one class at the studio at 9:30am. If you wish to attend yoga over the long weekends this summer, check the schedule regarding our holiday weekend classes.

Have a safe and wholesome summer!

Blessings from Lori, Shaina, Ellen & the Teachers at Body Harmony

Green Tip

Green TipFresh, local produce is not only better for you but also for the environment. Here are some tips to get the most out of your Farmer’s market experience:

Buy in season – in Vancouver you can find apricots, asparagus, basil, blueberries, carrots, cherries, peas, raspberries, strawberries, rhubarb, zucchinis (remember the blossoms are delicious too!)

Bring a re-usable bag – a lot of vendors are now giving discounts to those who bring their own bags

Plan meals and make a list – fresh produce is delicious, but does not have a long shelf life. Plan meals ahead to avoid waste.

Buy “whole foods” – The less processing that goes into food, the more environmentally friendly and nutritious it is. Buy unpeeled carrots, unwashed beets, and lettuce and greens without the packaging.

Get advice– The vendors know their produce better than anyone. Ask them what’s the freshest and tastiest produce on their shelves and how they would prepare the food.

JUNE VIEWS 2010 – A Breath of Fresh Air

Posted on: June 11, 2010

A Breath of Fresh AirWe have all experienced anxiety or a sleepless night. So when you’re restless, or it’s 3:30am and you haven’t had an adequate sleep, what do you do? Rather than allow your mind to run wild, look at it as an opportunity to simply focus on the moment. Sit still or lie down in śavāsana (the corpse pose), deepen your breathing, and just be with the sensations in your body. If you are truly in the moment, you will experience a peacefulness that can embrace the whole range of experience. No longer preoccupied with all the things that were making you anxious or keeping you awake, you settle into a sincere acceptance of what is. To develop this ability with ease, we need continual practice. Fortunately, a regular yoga practice can make you a mindfulness master!

There is so much enjoyment and gratification to be found through yoga, especially when it is taken outside. Add a whole new dimension to your practice and take full advantage of our great outdoors this summer by joining us for Yoga by the Beach! Starting June 15th, Lori is teaching Mixed Levels Hatha Yoga every Tuesday and Thursday from 10:30 to 11:30am at John Lawson Park in West Vancouver. How awesome it is to practice vrksāsana (the tree pose) amidst the trees. Plus, the fresh air and exercise can also help you sleep better.

In order to make it easier and more economical for you to enjoy our variety of yoga classes this summer, we are offering the 9 Week Unlimited Yoga pass for $99. This sale is open to everyone but it ends June 18th, so buy your pass today!

We hope to see you soon.

Namaste

Student of the Month

Student of the MonthCongratulations Lorna Bradwell! This multi-talented student has attended over 350 classes at Body Harmony and has written us this delightful poem:

Ode to Body Harmony Yoga StudioI love to do yoga, both Gentle and Yin.
Mixed Levels Hatha, I like to fit in.

The place where I practice is Body Harmony.
Lori and her staff are the best they can be.

The teachers are awesome; so patient and kind.
They remind me to breathe, and to quiet my mind.

I sit in Sukhasana, spine straight and tall,
Find my Drishti in tree pose, and try not to fall.

Standing in Mountain, engaging my core,
I lead with my heart, then head down to the floor.

Time for Vinyasa. Step back into Plank.

Up dog, then Down dog … my teachers I thank.

Finally Savasana … so simple and sweet.
Soft soothing music, a heavenly treat.

I’m grateful to practice without any fear.
There’s just loving kindness and good karma here.

Love,

Lorna and Cooper (my sidekick in the photo)

MAY VIEWS 2010 – The Value of Commitment

Posted on: May 11, 2010

The Value of CommitmentCommitment is strong word. Dedicating oneself to an engagement means a decision has been made and the integrity of word behind that decision will be tested. Whether the commitment involves a couple of hours for physical participation, a year of obligation to school/work, or a lifelong pledge to a spouse, we can expect an energetic shift. This type of shift is needed for life to grow and flow.

Owning a yoga studio has been a huge commitment, but it continues to provide great lessons and rewards. I am extremely grateful it has brought the experience of a wonderful community, and now a loving partner. We can all take comfort in knowing, that yoga practice can help us take on commitment and change in life more gracefully. At Body Harmony, we value your commitment to our studio and want you to know that we are dedicated to making it the best it can be. As we are continuously looking to make positive changes, please provide your feedback in our Spring Survey (you may win a FREE 10 Class Pass)!

We would like to extend a special thanks to all of those who committed to the Journey of Our Hearts and who helped build the schoolhouse in Peru which is pictured above. And, if you are committing yourself to a healthier lifestyle, then check out the vegetarian recipes our talented studio assistant Shaina has posted from the latest retreat! Finally, if you purchase your yoga passes between now until the end of June, you can take advantage of 5% savings (ex. 1 Year of Unlimited Yoga for only $960 plus gst).

Green Tips for Gardening

Green Tips for GardeningGrowing your own food is fun, delicious, money conscious and environmentally friendly.
Here are some tips on how to get started:

  • Ask a neighbor – Everyone has a neighbor with an immaculate garden. Knock on their door, and ask for tips about what grows best in you area. Neighbors are also a great source for borrowing gardening tools so you can save money and reduce waste.
  • Visit your local gardening center – the staff at most gardening centers are teaming with knowledge. Ask them what you need to get started and also, how you can make your home garden 100% organic.
  • Your computer – the internet is full with great (free and paperless) information about gardening. Find out when to plant different foods, watch gardening videos on YouTube, and even get great new recipes!
  • Trial and error – often the best way to learn is by just jumping in with both feet.
  • Make it organic – One of the best parts of growing your own food is knowing exactly how your plants are cultivated. Posted on: April 11, 2010

April Views - Journey Into SpringSpring has arrived! As nature goes through one of its most beautiful cycles of rebirth and regeneration, why don’t you join in? Start off this spring season by renewing your body, health and life. We at Body Harmony are preparing for our Spring Yoga Retreat and Cleanse at the Xenia Sanctuary on Bowen Island. If you can’t join us, why not partake in your own dietary cleanse to boost your personal health? You can also rejuvenate your life by cleaning out the clutter. Enlist family and friends to help you with a spring cleaning of your home. The practice of de-cluttering can be an immensely powerful ritual because when you clear space in your home you are also clearing space in your mind. Remember, in order to pick up something new, we must always first let go of something we have been holding onto.

Congratulations to all of our Journey of Our Hearts participants who are definitely starting this spring with renewed health and vitality. A remarkable 20 of our 42 participants completed the 7 Daily Renewal Practices for 8 of the 10 weeks of the Journey, which made them eligible for our 1 Year of Unlimited Yoga. Congratulations to Karen Bennett who won the draw for 1 Year of Unlimited Yoga, and is also featured below as our Student of the Month!

Namaste,

Lori, Ellen, Shaina and Teachers

Student of the Month

Student of the MonthCongratulations to Karen Bennett for completing 8 of the 10 weeks of Journey of Our Hearts and winning 1 Year of Unlimited Yoga. She says, “I have been very happy to begin my yoga practice at Body Harmony. Parking is easy, the physical space is beautiful and soothing with the views of mountains and trees, and the music. Each instructor brings a different presence to the class: Adrienne never fails to make me feel like I’m in the right place, doing the right thing for my body and my spirit; Lori challenges and guides me to expand my practice, striving to bring a note of interest and enlightenment; Jenn is a lovely gentle wake up on a Sunday morning. Yoga is the perfect complement to my other physical activities – hiking, snowshoeing, kayaking, training, aerobics. Many of these activities tighten me up; yoga helps to work out the kinks (physically and mentally!) and makes me stronger and more flexible. I have enjoyed Body Harmony so much I have brought my husband, two of my daughters (I’ll work on that third one) and several friends to the studio; they now enjoy yoga as well! Namaste, and thank you!”

New Class – Yin / Yang Yoga

New Class - Yin / Yang YogaBody Harmony has added a new class to its schedule…Yin / Yang Yoga! This style of yoga provides the best of both yin and yang practices in one class. The yin portion of the class consists of holding simple hatha yoga poses for extended periods of time (usually between 3 to 5 minutes) to stretch beyond the muscles and create greater flexibility in the connective tissues between the joints. In this class, the yin practice is married with yang practice where you flow through a variety of hatha yoga poses more quickly. The extended holding of these stretches in the yin portion is ideal for warming up the body and creating a more meditative state, while the more dynamic yang portion helps to strengthen and invigorate the body and mind.

Green Tip – Spring Cleaning

Green Tip - Spring CleaningUse baking soda instead of chemical cleaners. It’s cheap, effective and environmentally friendly!

  • Dissolve a couple of tablespoons of baking soda in water in a microwave safe bowl, then bring to the boil in your microwave. Allow to sit for a minute or two, then you should easily be able to wipe out any baked on stains, plus your microwave will smell fresher too.
  • To give your dishwasher a good clean, run it through a cycle and use baking soda instead of detergent.
  • Crayon marks on walls? Try applying baking soda/water paste on an old toothbrush and lightly brush the affected area.
  • Sprinkle baking soda on rugs and carpets before vacuuming as a deodorizing treatment. Most carpet powders you buy are baking soda based! Just a brief note on this – not recommended for areas that are very humid as the baking soda may stay in the carpet.
