DECEMBER VIEWS 2011 – Gift of Light

Posted on: December 11, 2011

Christmas has evolved into something different for me over the years, and I believe this to be common. It is ultimately a celebration, with a few days off and time to spend with family and friends. However, it is a holiday that isn’t always anticipated by all.

To surpass any ‘inner Grinch’ this holiday season, connect with what’s most important. Move past negative energies and into self inquiry. Find a way to transform the energy within yourself and be with your true essence. As an example, if judging someone’s extensive use of Christmas lights, investigate inwardly, asking how it relates to you. In this case, you could connect to the brilliant colors and magnificent warmth these lovely orbs can bring, recognizing that we are all a form of energy. Make a valuable observation in knowing that we are all essentially the same, and all essentially good. Be grateful for fleeting moments of self union, or better yet, oneness with all.

May you be gifted with inner light this holiday season, and allow it to bring all that you need!

Peace, Blessings & Holiday Wishes

Btw, Please see that we are closed for December 25th & 26th and there are minor schedule changes over the holidays.

Student of the Month

Congratulations Suzanne Ristic! Suzanne’s face is a familiar one as she has been consistent carving out the time for practice in her day, making the effort to attend all of the classes we offer over the past few years! You can be sure when she places her mat, she is an earnest student ready to take direction and learn. She penned this comment on her experience at Body Harmony. “Thank you Lori for the $99.00 Special because it brought me into Body Harmony three years ago and I’ve been a committed student ever since. The first two years I attended at least four classes a week, usually five, and sometimes as often as six but unfortunately my body is wearing down and with great regret I’ve had to stop going to all the classes I love. Body Harmony is a great gift I give to myself. I leave classes feeling revived and relaxed (until I get home!). I often say that it is like getting a full body massage and at a fraction of the cost! The principles that apply to yoga: being in the moment, connection to breath, self awareness, also apply to my profession as an actor and I am convinced that I am a better actor because of the work I do at Body Harmony. Thank you for selecting me as Student of the Month.” It is our pleasure to see students grow on the mat and off. If you would like to support Suzanne in her upcoming production, check out “Old Love” at the Presentation House Theatre this Dec 2 – 18th.

NOVEMBER VIEWS 2011 – Ahimsa

Posted on: November 11, 2011

A well intended yogi friend said to me recently, “I can’t believe people don’t know what this means!” I had an inner smile because we were referring to a concept taught to us at a very young age. The concept was Ahimsa, a Sanskrit word which means ‘do no harm,’ and implies that non-violence is vital to a peaceful existence. Without getting into where it originates from in the sacred Vedic texts, let’s just say it is a term that reminds us to respect and take care of ourselves and others. In essence, to steer away from thoughts, speech and actions that hurt us and this earth we live upon.Anyone who has read to this point would agree that the practice of ahimsa is key to a safe and happy Halloween. (If you are going to give out treats, perhaps give healthy treats!) Its days like these we might have to choose ‘the lesser of two evils’, however, on a daily basis we can always find a way to deepen our relationship with ahimsa, making the world a better place. One budding entrepreneur is doing just that by bringing more awareness to non-violence and other important elements of yogic philosophy through clothing. The t-shirt sported in the photo here is a sample of this clothing. Learn more about  8limbyogashirts at the booth we’ll be sharing at the Yoga Conference next weekend, or look to the December Views for more details.Peace & BlissLoriBtw, please ‘fall back’ with the clocks on November 6th to be timely for all your Sunday events! And kindly forward our information about the $99 Fall Serendipity Sale to all your friends!

Student of the Month

Congratulations Anne Leader! When asked to comment on her experience at Body Harmony, we were so inspired by her feedback, we wanted to share her entire poetic take on yoga.“Teachers who inspire their students by excelling at their profession and sharing their knowledge with patience, generosity and grace are a rare treasure. Combine teachers who radiate these qualities with the sacred environment of Body Harmony Yoga, and you have a recipe for something magical to occur – transformation of the highest order. As I walked through the front door of Body Harmony for the first time, this combination immediately began to work its magic on me. I quickly morphed from feeling awkward and self-conscious, to knowing I had just landed in a safe place where I was welcome and could begin to explore the extraordinary world of hatha yoga. It didn’t take long for the awesome power of this ancient practice to make its presence known as I felt yoga’s healing energy working on and through me on many different levels. Half a year later, the transformation to this point has been so thorough that being pain free and at ease with my body has become my new normal.”

“Another element that enhances my experience at Body Harmony is the students. Without question, yoga is a deeply personal journey. However, when a room full of committed students are enthusiastically putting forth great self-effort, and enjoying themselves in the process, a wonderful feeling of camaraderie is created. The supportive energy generated by this group dynamic is tangible, and I thankfully drink it all in.”

“To Lori, fellow students and trusted teachers, with great respect and hands in anjali mudra, I bow to each of you. May the gift of yoga, passed down from ancient Masters and living on through the dedicated teachers of present day, continue to flourish and enrich the lives of people everywhere, including those with the good fortune to find themselves in the room with the blue carpet. Namaste.”

Grounding in Order to Grow with Nathalie Saunderson

Just when you think you’ve got the hang of it! It is common for those of us with yoga experience to hit a plateau, either with strength or focus. This workshop will start with a rhythmic vinyasa styled warm up, with reminders of the grounding principles necessary for a solid practice . Then we will slowly and safely move deeper into the yoga. With foundation elements in mind, we will then utilize the principles of tensegrity to find new ways to strengthen and lengthen the body. Tensegrity will allow us to lengthen into our environment in two directions, using our muscles to find space and freedom. Some yoga experience is recommended, as we will be building on tuning our postures to bring the practice into a whole new light.  Preregister Now

Freeing Behind the Heart with Nathalie Saunderson

In this workshop we will focus on finding both, the expansiveness of the lungs and the freedom of the upper back. Using Iyengar principles to go deeper into the shoulder girdle, we will prepare for safe backbends and ultimately a deeper breath. When we think of heart openers, it usually brings to mind a forward motion that then tends to cut off movement in the back ribs. In this session, we will create new pathways of movement to allow us to release residualtension in the upper and mid back. The Iyengar method encourages the use of props to retrain the body to find the space it needs for an effective pranayama practice. Be prepared to find a depth of breath that will dive you into a deeper sensation and understanding of your body.Saturday November 26 Preregister Now

OCTOBER VIEWS 2011 – What is Your Passion?

Posted on: October 11, 2011

Yoga is my passion. Simply stated, regardless of the question, yoga is usually the answer. It seems there is always a way to bring some element of yoga into a conversation. Feeling anxious? Do Yoga. Not sleeping? Breathe and meditate. Wondering about what direction to take your career? Dedicate your yoga practice with the intention to find guidance, then repeatedly ask yourself ‘what brings out the best in me?’

In those raw and quiet yoga moments, you can recognize your passion within you! Passion has energy. You will feel the power that comes from focusing on what excites you. Then, you can use that burst of energy or excitement to move you through those things that hold you back from what you want. There will always be obstacles that try to get in the way of your happiness, so keep the big picture in view! When you need that bit of motivation to get you past the small stuff, remember what fires you up. Whether or not YOU love yoga, when you find a style and teacher that suits your lifestyle, you’ll tap into the answers of all life’s questions.

THANK YOU everyone for your support and contributions to my passion. Especially those fellow teachers and students who continue to grow with the studio and get involved with its random acts of ‘community’. (If you purchased a raffle ticket for the schoolhouse in Peru, you will enjoy this heart warming video of the ceremony announcing the winner of the free trip for two).

Many blessings to you all this month of Thanksgiving. Please note, the long weekend class schedule is slightly changed as per usual.

Love & Light

Student of the Month

Congratulations Laurie Beveridge! What a lady. Since 2006, we have enjoyed her presence at the studio and find it so rewarding to hear how positive a role the studio has played in her life. She writes, “I remember the day I came to Body Harmony to join the $99 special. Needless to say, I was hooked! There has always been a sense of community and sincere interest in encouraging you as a person, to be in a healthy place for yourself. All the teachers help you to find confidence in yourself and to listen to your heart. What stands out the most for me, are all the messages I hear that bring serenity to the demands of daily life. Whether it is a poem, reading or thought for the day, each teacher has a wonderful way of expressing their wisdom. I feel very grateful to have Body Harmony in my life, with Lori and all the wonderful teachers. I look forward to many more years of this journey and to seeing you there!”

SEPTEMBER VIEWS 2011 – Monkey Mind

Posted on: September 11, 2011

My husband is quite the comedian. Earlier this week he sang, “Five little monkeys, jumping in your head” and although it would sound like this tune was directed to a young child, in this case he was referring to me. I guess the multi-tasking of motherhood can make one look a little whimsical and somewhat indecisive. Let this be the confession of a yogi who admits that missing too many of those morning meditations and asana practices, has recently resulted in a bit of a ‘monkey mind’. This Buddhist term, is used in reference to a stream of thoughts that come and go without control. Thinking too much about the week ahead, all sorts of stories begin to surface. The ‘what if’ and ‘how about’ thoughts are classic and all humans experience these different mind energies. The ebb and flow of thoughts – both pleasant and unpleasant – are totally natural, but controllable and need not be troublesome.

Somehow I manage to stop everything, get outside to sit in the park, BREATHE and slow the thought patterns. The little one who just learned to crawl this week, falls asleep in the stroller beside me and I am gifted a moment to write this. The late afternoon sun feels heavenly and there is a realization that everything that needs to get done, eventually will. It may even be enjoyable. September along with every other month will come and go, and in the meantime I choose to smile and think, “No more monkeys jumping in my head”.

Peace & Blessings,

Lori Charko

btw, have a stellar long weekend and please refer to the schedule before going to the studio…

AUGUST VIEWS 2011 – Sweet Surrender

Posted on: August 11, 2011

Can you remember a time you may have been holding onto ‘the idea of something’ that just wasn’t flowing? You probably didn’t feel very good. Imagine how it would have felt if you completely let go and detached from ‘the idea’ and acknowledged what actually was. Likely, the feeling would resemble that of a light feather. Surrendering to the moment and accepting ‘what actually is’ invites a feeling of harmony within. A lack of ease or ‘dis-ease’ creates illness in the mind and body. Since most of us aspire to feel harmony of mind and body, let’s embrace the concept that surrendering brings a wealth of health to ones being.

Learning to surrender takes practice though. Develop this precious skill through the arts, meditation or simply by doing things you enjoy. Instead of wanting and waiting, begin your sweet surrender exercises today.

Have a lovely long weekend and a summer complete with contentment.

Student of the Months

Congratulations Erin & Sierra Wood! We are so happy to acknowledge these special students this month. It has been very inspiring to see this team join us so regularly over the last year, especially with the extra challenges life has thrown their way. The effort Erin has made to attend twice a week with Sierra is commendable (and rarely does she enter without a smile:). When asked what she likes about our studio, she writes, “I practice at Body Harmony because it is a friendly, warm environment in which I feel supported in my practice. I love the prenatal and Mom & Baby classes, and especially enjoy the tea time afterwards, where ideas and wisdom are shared.” We say, “May God bless you both…”

Open Mind, Open Heart: Touching the Wonders of Now

World renowned Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh will be visiting Vancouver this month to offer insights into acheiving inner peace, as individuals and as a society. The talk will focus on removing the preoccupations that keep us stuck in habitual ways of thinking and reacting. Throughout his years of dedicated practice as a Buddhist monk, he has influenced thousands of people to engage more fully with themselves and the world at large. The afternoon will include a guided meditation and healing chant with the monks and nuns of Plum village, a collective of people dedicated to living as instruments of peace and compassion. To check out the event in detail, click on the link below to read more about Thich and the event details.

Green Tip

Sometimes all it takes to brighten your day is a small 3” x 5” card with a sincere – sometimes humorous – always simple message. There are a plethora of wonderful greeting cards to purchse on these special occasions, to say “Merci”, “Thinking of You” or “Congratulations!”. However, with a few coloured pens, some recycled items and a little inspiration, you can create a memorable, unique and personalized card. Stamps are another great way to transform a recycled note to seem unique and stylish. Hand-made cards are not only environmentally and economically friendly, they’re a great way to cultivate important relationships and your creativity as well.

JULY VIEWS 2011 – Celebrations!

Posted on: July 11, 2011

Celebrations! In light of the recent Stanley Cup episode, many of us British Columbians are still left with remnants of disappointment, wondering how to go about celebrating Canada Day with our usual sense of pride. As Canadians we are typically deemed friendly and down-to-earth, making us wonder at the whirlwind of events that metastasized horribly wrong, and then cringe at the spectacle of interest it created. In my opinion, a lot of good people were swept into the ’photographing of strangeness’ which purely by happenstance, ended up increasing the mob and its desire to entertain spectators with reckless abandon. If all those good people took a moment to bring their moral values and/or yoga practice to the surface, they quite likely would have left the scene. They would have stopped, taken a breath and thought: “Does the energy in this environment feel positive? Is this safe? Am I contributing to something good?”

Our ancestors used celebrations to connect with their community and elevate their spirit as a whole. They would celebrate with music, singing, dancing and the sharing of stories! It is refreshing to know, that healthy celebrations of this type are still carried on by many cultures today. Let it be a gentle reminder for those who have forgotten how to truly celebrate.

Again this year I am linking you to the Top 10 Things to Do in Vancouver for Canada Day. Use this to stimulate wholesome ideas of celebrations with family and friends, or join us for yoga July 1st at 9:30am and 12:30pm. May every day have reason to celebrate and as Oprah said in her final show, “…you’re responsible for the energy you create for yourself, and you’re responsible for the energy that you bring to others.”  Prayers for Bliss & Sunshine,

Lori Charko

Btw, there are many yoga classes at Body Harmony this weekend, but please check the website for any changes from the regular schedule…

Student of the Month

Student of the MonthCongratulations Tina Hopkins! It’s not often students recognize yoga practice as being integral to their journey through life, but we see that Tina does. She’s dedicated, sincere and approachable, with a focus in class that is felt and contagious (whether tackling a challenging pose or simply breathing deeper). She writes, “For the first six years of practicing yoga I was blessed with a private instructor once a week. However, last summer I felt the need to expand and deepen my practice. After taking a variety of yoga classes on the North Shore, I found Body Harmony. From the first class, I felt welcome and at ease in the serene environment of the studio , and knew my search was over. I usually attend 3-4 classes a week, of varying styles and intensities, and have felt so inspired by the care, wisdom, and skill of my instructors, and the effect these are having on my practice and life in general, that I started a journal to record the journey. I am grateful for the community of BHYS, and look forward to many years of practicing together.” We do too Tina, thank you.

The Marriage of Yoga and Astrology

The Marriage of Yoga and Astrology Astrology can often be experienced as something abstract which happens up in the sky or more commonly as a curious chuckle with our coffee and the morning paper. Each individual, even if you are a twin, is born with a unique placement of planets at the time of birth. This placement acts as a blueprint of possibilities for the individual. We are also born with free will (thankfully) so how we choose to experience the placement of our birth planets is ultimately up to us. Knowing which energies, possibilities and teachings are available to us at the various stages and cycles of our life can be very impactful. It is akin to driving through life with a map or without. There are many roads available to us and seeing things from a larger perspective or in a greater context can make navigating the terrain a little easier.

This past month we have experienced two of three eclipses, the final one will take place July 1st as a partial solar eclipse with the sun and moon in cancer. A lot has been shaken up this past month and we now are invited to experience the qualities of receptivity, healing and nurturing. Cancer represents the feminine qualities, Mother, our emotional body, our heart centre, our sense of security, safety and our family. We are being gently nudged to allow our thoughts, words, actions and deeds to come from the heart. In our yoga practice we can further support this experience by including a Gentle and Yin focus to our practice this month. Asana (yoga poses) that open the chest and heart will be beneficial. Fish, Camel, and supported chest openers with the breath directed to the heart centre are a few you may wish to include.

Green Tip

Green TipRarely do we think about the amount of water we come in contact with, let alone about how it’s heated. A surprising  20% of energy consumption in a house goes towards this process, in order to make our showers warm and our dishwashers run! In the process, both gas and electricity produce toxic byproducts, either in our homes or at the site of the energy production. One way we can start to cut back on overuse is to simply lower the temperature of our heaters. Summer is a great time to use this method, as rarely do we need the warming up we do in winter. Another idea is to insulate the heater itself. This can be done with blankets or padding to keep the unit contained and enclosed in the process. Water in general is a commodity we take for granted, so even a few mindful practices start to make a broader impact. If you’re looking to cut back on water usage in general, a good place to start is by installing low-flow shower heads or a low pressure toilet tank. If we choose to make small choices in how we run our lives and homes, it may be a small drop in the bucket, but it’s still a drop.

JUNE VIEWS 2011 – Making Time for You

Posted on: June 11, 2011

June Views - Making Time for YouIf we had more time, we would spend extra hours with people we care for, play outside more often, read things we enjoy and revel in all that we value in life. It seems that in this day and age, as we accept more responsibility, there is less time devoted to balancing play, love and work. We all make varying choices to juggle these needs. However if somehow, someway, we could each have more time for ourselves, wouldn’t we want to seek it and reap the rewards?

‘Rituals’ in daily life can, and have been shown to promote more organized and productive behaviour. In fact, having rituals may be The Only Way to Get Important Things Done! It is said, that adding a conscious routine of daily exercise creates an unconscious string of events that take on a positive life of their own. If this is true, then wouldn’t it be extra special to include yoga as a ritual? Not only would we be better at managing ourselves, but by being deeply present during yoga practice, we would slow down, thus perceiving to have more time.

To incorporate more yoga exercise into your schedule, and help make room for all that you love in life, we have decided to offer the 9 Weeks of Unlimited Yoga for $99 to everyone again this summer! Also, in acknowledgement of Father’s Day, we hope this will be an added incentive for the men in our lives to find greater flexibility and enjoy yoga as a moving meditation.

Thank you to those who gave feedback in our spring survey and Congratulations to Anton Bloem, winner of the 10 Class Flexi Pass. Blessings to all Fathers and Happy Summer Solstice!

btw, all Body Harmony passes can be used for Yoga by the Beach again this summer. Classes are 10:30am on Tuesdays and Thursdays at John Lawson Park, starting June 14th!

Student of the Month

Student of the MonthCongratulations Paula Garcia! Many of you have probably practiced beside Paula at one point or another, so we decided it was time to introduce her! Not only does this humble and quiet student make it in to practice about 3 days a week, she usually shows up with a smile:) She writes, “It’s been a PLEASURE and an honor for me to be part of Body Harmony Yoga studio since Dec 7 2008! At that time I was coping with my mothers loss so I decided to start helping heal my soul and my exhausted body. Now I see it more like a delightful necessity that without it I would not be able to go through the week after work! I have learned to breath properly plus all the benefits that concentration, resistance, relaxation and toning of my body provide, with willingness and dedication. I know there is a long way to go for me and that I have lots to learn but it’s totally worth it! I love you all!”

Green Tip

Green TipWhen we think about the environment, we can feel fortunate that we live in a time where so many people are starting to shift to being more “green”. One of the simplest places to implement these changes is in our gardens. As we set out to get our hands dirty, instead of using expensive pest control products, opt for a more natural and plant based option. Some of the best fertilizers are in fact the byproducts of the garden itself! To get started, save dead leaves, grass clippings, branches, old roots and weeds to build a hefty pile of organic goodness. To speed up the decomposition process, layer fresh plant material from the kitchen and dry organic soil on top (making sure to keep your compost moist and well aerated). Pretty soon you’ll have a medley of organic material to nourish this years growth. To check out a few companies who are blazing this trail, try or . You’ll find a variety of natural products to keep pests at bay and ensure your garden is green, both inside and out.

MAY VIEWS 2011 – A Moment for Mother’s

Posted on: May 11, 2011

May Views - A Moment for Mother'sThe experience of motherhood changes pretty much everything, especially the perception of Mother’s Day! On that one day in May that is designated to honour the mother, it now seems to me that cards, flowers, jewellery and humble words of thanks are somewhat insignificant. How can one possibly begin to acknowledge the never ending nurturing nature of a loving Mom?

It’s true that I now look at people differently. As I hold my daughter and type with one hand, I realize that we were all babies once, and from the moment we arrived into this world someone had to care for us. It’s a special ability to be able to extend one self to a child while sleep deprived, and at the same time prioritize the necessities of household duties and possibly even a career.

With great reverence (and likely a card or flowers) I will do my best to show gratitude to my dear mother this month. I absolutely would not be where I am today, nor would I be able to accomplish what I do, without her. Thus, when I do take a moment to meditate upon all this, it will surely be a spiritual one.

Blessings to All Mama’s & Namaste

Student of the Month

Student of the MonthCongratulations Claudine Lacombe! Claudine is one of those wonderful Mom’s that we admire and respect for her initiative to make it to yoga class! Along with caring for her small child (and having a second one on the way) she manages to put yoga into her schedule. She notes, “Over the years, I’ve tried several other yoga studios but I keep running back to Body Harmony! It might be because of its convenient location, its varied schedule or the beloved last minutes of relaxation at the end of class. Maybe it’s how organized the studio is, the fact that I can leave my yoga mat there or perhaps the tea and cookies after prenatal yoga. Certainly all that, but mostly I love how it makes me feel during the class and afterwards. I find something I value and get inspired by with each different teacher I’ve met at Body Harmony. Merci! I look forward to many more years of stretching, grounding and relaxing.”

APRIL VIEWS 2011 – Our Earth

Posted on: April 11, 2011

April Views - Our EarthRecent earthquakes and the potential of another looming is not something we wish to hear about, however I would like to shed some light on what I think is happening here. Natural disasters are brought upon us to teach us about LOVE, rather than fear. Although it’s a good idea to prepare for what could come, the focus now is to LOVE those experiencing rough times, instead of dwelling in the fear and insecurity we have for our own lives and well being. The media does a great job putting all sorts of images in our minds, however what we can do is truly imagine the situation the people of New Zealand and Japan are in, and then feel our hearts open. It’s with this openness we can give and offer our support. Tragedies like earthquakes actually bring people together on this earth we all share.

Earth Day is approaching on April 22nd and I encourage you to look towards it with light, love and a positive feeling that allows you to nurture it and its inhabitants with compassion. As the days become longer and the light of spring shines upon you, offer blessings to our community, our country and our world.

Wishing you peace and Body Harmony,

Lori Charko

PS  A huge THANK YOU to those who participated in this year’s Journey of Our Hearts program and to those who made donations to our sponsor child in Peru. God bless.

Green Tip – Kale Chips

Green Tip - Kale ChipsWith Easter just around the corner, it’s easy to get carried away with a sweet tooth. It’s not that we should deprive ourselves of enjoying a few treats, but a few can quickly become too many! A healthy, tasty and crunchy alternative are kale chips! Yes, these greens can be done up quickly and are a good way to add nutrition to your snacking! Hope you enjoy these alongside a few chocolate eggs.

Kale Chips (Black or Curly Kale)

1. Clean and spin dry kale.
2. Remove spines and rip them into smaller bits with fingers, moisten with a
teaspoon or two of olive (or preferred) oil. Do not over oil! Some people also add a touch of balsamic vinegar.
3. Spread onto baking sheet and cook at 375°F for 10 to 12 minutes, turning about halfway through cooking process. They are not as nice if they brown.
4. Remove from oven and add salt.

MARCH VIEWS 2011 – Making Sense of Scents

Posted on: March 11, 2011

Making Sense of ScentsThere is something so soothing about the scent of a newborn. The comforting and intoxicating smell of a baby’s face quite often has us craving even more of its freshness. The aroma of Johnson’s Baby Products is not what I’m referring to, but rather the natural scent of a little ones skin.

The skin, the human body’s largest organ, doesn’t smell sweetly forever. With the help of a healthy diet the skin will constantly renew itself, however the rate of regeneration slows down considerably as we age. Along with the deceleration of new skin cells, adults tend to contaminate the skin with perfumed products. Deodorants and lotions quite often contain perfumes which are very destructive to the natural functioning of our bodies. Ironically, instead of improving our hygiene, the overabundance of chemicals and toxins contained in these products actually causes headaches, eczema, allergies and other ailments. Sneezing, coughing, and watery eyes are clear indications of an instant allergic reaction – an immune response to foreign particles in the lungs.

In yoga class, we are consciously working to improve our breathing and lung capacity. So we’re reminding students to please refrain from using scented lotions and perfumes when coming in for a class, while staying considerate of personal hygiene. Not all natural products work for everyone, and they often need to be switched up. To make more sense of scents, check out Ecoholic by Adria Vasil.

Many Blessings,

Lori & Staff at Body Harmony

P.S. Our little Tika took her first breath on Saturday, January 29th at 10:05pm (the day after the last newsletter was sent). Thank you for the collective breathing everyone!

Green Tip

Green TipAs we continue to develop a deeper sense of awareness, we foster an awareness and concern for our local and global environment as well. Daily habits such as using re-useable grocery bags, travel mugs and recycled paper do so much for the well-being of our planet and gives truth to the phrase, “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” These simple actions surmount to profound positive change on a global scale; the rate at which non-biodegradable waste accumulates is reduced, and creatures and critters are less likely to ingest bits and pieces of garbage. Re-useable bags are not just for grocery shopping, but for clothes, shoe and other miscellaneous shopping trips too. Another idea to try, either re-use the plastic bags for loose produce (ie. apples, yams, onions, etc.), or invest in re-useable mesh bags to hold your fruits and veggies!

So as you relax, rejuvenate and re-new, remember the other 3 R’s as well: reduce, reuse, recycle.
