Most often that primary caregiver is a woman. A clever Oprah quote reads, “Biology is the least of what makes someone a mother”. What I take from this today, is that mothering goes far beyond bearing a child and that bearing a child doesn’t necessarily make one a mother. Most biological moms have that innate and expansive ability to give unconditional love to a child (and do), and <em>all women have a natural potential to be motherly and to nurture others.</p>
<p></em>To cultivate this motherly seed, women need to take care of themselves. The belief that we need to take care of ourselves before we can properly take care of others, is not new. What is new at Body Harmony, is a yoga pass created to help women do this. For the month of <span style="color: #800080;"><strong>May, Body Harmony is honouring all women with a TLC Pass.</strong></span> This 4 Class Pass is good for all regular classes and is priced economically at $40 plus tax with a one month expiry. So ladies, show up for the class of choice a little bit earlier than usual or call the studio and ask reception for the TLC Pass. You may wish to purchase more than one! We extend this welcome to all female students, but aspire to see those who haven’t been to Body Harmony in a while.</p>
<p>With the new signage outside the building, it is evident that relocation is very probable. Although nothing has been confirmed, we are looking for a new space keeping in mind the excellent feedback from the Spring Surveys! We are excited about all the possibilities that the change can bring, with an intention to keep the studio about the same size and in the same area of North Vancouver. <span style="color: #800080;"><strong>Thank you to everyone who gave their precious time </strong></span>to share thoughts and feelings about our special studio, your remarks were most encouraging. And congratulations to <span style="color: #800080;"><strong>Joyce Mahy</strong></span>, whose name was drawn to receive one free month of yoga!</p>

Can anyone guess where this lovely gal has been hiking in this photo? Ms. Paula is a bubbly, bright eyed student whose calming and gentle presence can be felt by those around her, in and out of the studio. When asked to say a few words about her experience with Body Harmony she said, “Body Harmony is a <span style="color: #800080;"><strong>beautiful, non-intimidating studio</strong></span> with <span style="color: #000000;"></span>graceful</span> <span style="color: #000000;"></span>and dedicated teachers</span>. I have learned a lot from them, and have learned to be lighter in my approach to daily life, and work life. I think the studio helps build a <span style="color: #800080;"><strong>strong sense of community</strong></span> and belonging which is hard sometimes in the busy and fast-paced lives we all live.</p>

When listened to with awareness, it gives us an opportunity to learn and grow. The response our body gives during an asana in yoga practice, gives an indication of what needs to be done next. If the feedback offered brings us happiness, then we can continue to enjoy the breath while maintaining the posture, or consider moving in more deeply. If we feel pain, we need to adjust the posture and ease off, breathing deeply while delving into the initial cause of the issue. If we feel discomfort, then we can send a full conscious breath to the area that needs attention, while perhaps visualizing the release of tension. Amazingly, if we truly listen to the body and respond appropriately at all times, we will seldom experience dis-ease.</p>
<p>At Body Harmony Yoga, the success of our studio also revolves around feedback. A healthy feedback system for us would involve your participation in our <strong><a style="color: #657d93; text-decoration: underline;" href="http://bodyharmonyyoga.createsend1.com/t/r/l/dtglry/utjhjyhhl/k/"><span style="color: #008000;">Spring Survey</span></a><span style="color: #008000;">.</span></strong> Please take 2 minutes to complete our new compilation of questions, and in turn, we will process and respond to the feedback received. (An added bonus is that all entries will be entered into a draw to <span style="color: #008000;"><strong>win 1 Month of Unlimited Yoga or a 5 Class Pass</strong></span>). Do recall, feedback offers us all the potential for growth.</p>
<p>A couple of nice-to-know items include the <span style="color: #008000;"><strong>Serenity Now Sale </strong></span><span style="color: #008000;"><strong>extension </strong></span>on now until March 31/12. That means the 20 classes for $200 with a 6 month expiry, is on for just a couple more days. As well, the <span style="color: #008000;"><strong>Journey of Our Hearts draw winner was Paula Bohan</strong></span>. Congratulations to her and to all who participated in this year’s program!</p>

David holds a special place in our hearts, and demonstrates an amazing dedication to his practice twice a week. He always carries a great disposition and we enjoy seeing him regularly.</p>
<p></span>We asked David about his experience with yoga, and these were his comments: “After watching Joanne participate in yoga for several years, I was <span style="color: #008000;"><strong>inspired by the passion </strong></span><span style="color: #000000;"></span>that she showed</span> for her practice. So, never wanting to be left out of a good thing, I decided I would try it out.</p>
<p>That was almost three years ago. Today, I really look forward to my yoga class after a day in the office. I enjoy the variety of teachers, the <span style="color: #008000;"><strong>enthusiasm and attention</strong></span> they bring to their students. It is nice to know that I can attend any class that works for my unpredictable schedule and not be disappointed. Body Harmony has become more than a place to learn and practice yoga. <p>A tough act to follow, but where there’s a will there’s a way! For now though, I would like to bring attention to the third agreement: <strong><span style="color: #4b0082;">with this bit of wisdom, </span><span style="color: #4b0082;">we have the ability to transform many things.</p>
<p></span></strong>At a glance, we often judge and miss the real beauty in someone or something. It’s when we actually look into someone’s eyes and listen, that we see their inner beauty and begin to understand them. With that lovely connection available all around us, imagine moving through the front door at 972 Marine Drive, walking up the stairs and finally settling into the studio. There too we are rewarded with connecting to that innermost beauty.</p>
<p>The peacefulness and bliss of Body Harmony Yoga is still there and it intends to be for years to come. I love what we have created and will do everything possible to make it grow for the community. Although it may not always look exactly how we imagined, it will surely hold all the heartwarming beauty and serenity we need. If we look within, <span style="color: #4b0082;"><strong>be patient and trust in ‘what is’,</strong></span> we will see that everything is unfolding as it should for our highest good. Quite often, things turn out even better than we imagined!</p>

She has been thriving with the Journey of Our Hearts and Lori has enjoyed having her in class every week for the &#8216;chakra flows&#8217;.</p>
<p>When asked about her experience here at Body Harmony she says, “I had been thinking about joining a yoga studio for a while, and I was intimidated by some of them - I felt too out of shape. I knew I wanted to do Hatha yoga, not hot or flow or power yoga. I finally joined on a 9-week $99 special, because Body Harmony had <span style="color: #4b0082;"><strong>regular gentle classes.</strong></span> By the end of nine weeks, I had tried several different instructors and was confident enough to go beyond the gentle classes.</p>
<p>I found Body Harmony very welcoming, and the studio is so serene. I recommend rubbing your palms together vigorously and then placing them open to your heart center. Feel and listen as you breathe. Be receptive and allow the communication to flow between your lower bodily system and your upper more spiritual system. Hear what arises and revere to have this practice advance your mind-body connection.</p>
<p>Regardless of how you work to maintain a healthy heart, understand that an abundance of love (for both giving and receiving) begins with complete and <span style="color: #b22222;"><strong>wholehearted love for yourself.</strong></span>Have a Happy Heart Month!</p>

<p>Congratulations <span style="color: #b22222;"><strong>Adrian Parker! </strong></span>This month we would like to show the love to Adrian, a loyal and long time patron of Body Harmony. When we asked her for a few words about her experience at the studio, we were touched with her reply. &#8220;Wow! Student of the month, why me? It should be that we give Lori and her instructors special recognition. The studio is a wonderfully peaceful place to practice Yoga. I was introduced to the practice of yoga at Body Harmony the first year they were in business. <span style="color: #b22222;"><strong>Yoga has proven to be a wonderful complement to the two sports I still pursue; golf and downhill skiing.</strong></span> Yoga has made me more flexible and stronger and helped my balance.<span style="color: #b22222;"><strong> I’ve also learned to slow my mind and be in the moment, </strong></span>to find peace in the meditation that comes with every class. I love the excellence of instruction that Adrienne provides and the fun camaraderie of the other participants. <p>It’s been an interesting year! World events aside, recent developments in our little world have brought yet another need for change. With a baby girl taking her first few solo steps, it seems somewhat symbolic that I too need to step forward. January will mark nine years of operating Body Harmony Yoga, and this anniversary will start with the<strong><span style="color: #ee82ee;"> Journey of Our Hearts. </span></strong>I request community support on this journey, a program working towards physical and mental wellness. May it bring more balance and heartfelt growth to our lives, preparing us for a wonderful year ahead!</p>
<p>Looking forward with faith and optimism of everything to come, I must say thank you to our unwavering clientele for your attendance during my leave. With all of you at Body Harmony, it feels like there are more than one set of footprints in the sand&#8230;</p>

<p>Congratulations <span style="color: #ee82ee;"><strong>Heather Korsa!</strong></span> It is our privilege to acknowledge Heather as Januarys&#8217; Student of the Month. She has been a glowing presence at our studio since 2009 and has a warm and inviting energy that resonates with everyone she has come in contact with at Body Harmony.</p>
<p>She says of her experience, “It has been my pleasure to attend classes at Body Harmony over the past many years. Like many people, I started at Body Harmony because of the $99 special.</p>
<p>I would like to thank you Lori, and all of your wonderful instructors, for sharing your passion for yoga with me. I have always had a very active lifestyle, enjoying biking, skiing, hiking and other fitness pursuits, but I often skip the stretching part after my activities. My work is physically demanding too. <span style="color: #ee82ee;"><strong>Yoga has saved me!</strong></span> My body was beginning to stiffen and my lower back was causing me pain after years of not bothering to stretch. <p>Christmas has evolved into something different for me over the years, and I believe this to be common. It is ultimately a celebration, with a few days off and time to spend with family and friends. However, it is a holiday that isn’t always anticipated by all.</p>
<p>To surpass any ‘inner Grinch’ this holiday season, connect with what’s most important. Move past negative energies and into self inquiry. Find a way to transform the energy within yourself and be with your true essence. As an example, if judging someone’s extensive use of Christmas lights, investigate inwardly, asking how it relates to you. In this case, you could connect to the brilliant colors and magnificent warmth these lovely orbs can bring, recognizing that we are all a form of energy. Make a valuable observation in knowing that we are all essentially the same, and all essentially good. Be grateful for fleeting moments of self union, or better yet, oneness with all.</p>
<p>May you be gifted with inner light this holiday season, and allow it to bring all that you need!</p>

<p>Congratulations <span style="color: #006400;"><strong>Suzanne Ristic! </strong></span>Suzanne’s face is a familiar one as she has been consistent carving out the time for practice in her day, making the effort to attend all of the classes we offer over the past few years! You can be sure when she places her mat, she is an earnest student ready to take direction and learn. She penned this comment on her experience at Body Harmony. “Thank you Lori for the $99.00 Special because it brought me into Body Harmony three years ago and I&#8217;ve been a committed student ever since. The first two years I attended at least four classes a week, usually five, and sometimes as often as six but unfortunately my body is wearing down and with great regret I&#8217;ve had to stop going to all the classes I love. Body Harmony is a <span style="color: #006400;"><strong>great gift I give to myself.</strong></span> I leave classes feeling revived and relaxed (until I get home!). I often say that it is like getting a full body massage and at a fraction of the cost! <p><span style="color: #696969;"><span style="color: #696969;">Anyone who has read to this point would agree that the practice of ahimsa is key to a safe and happy</span><span style="color: #4b0082;"><strong> Halloween</strong></span></p>
<div><span style="color: #696969;">. (If you are going to give out treats, perhaps give healthy treats!) Its days like these we might have to choose ‘the lesser of two evils’, however, on a daily basis we can always find a way to deepen our relationship with ahimsa, making the world a better place.</span></div>

<div><span style="color: #696969;">&#8220;Teachers who inspire their students by excelling at their profession and sharing their knowledge with patience, generosity and grace are a rare treasure. Combine teachers who radiate these qualities with the sacred environment of Body Harmony Yoga, and you have a recipe for something magical to occur - transformation of the highest order. As I walked through the front door of Body Harmony for the first time, this combination immediately began to work its magic on me. I quickly morphed from feeling awkward and self-conscious, to knowing I had just landed in a safe place where I was welcome and could begin to explore the extraordinary world of hatha yoga. It didn&#8217;t take long for the awesome power of this ancient practice to make its presence known as I felt yoga&#8217;s healing energy working on and through me on many different levels. Half a year later, the transformation to this point has been so thorough that being pain free and at ease with my body has become my new normal.&#8221;</span></div>

<p>In those raw and quiet yoga moments, you can recognize your passion within you! <span style="color: #ffa500;"><strong>Passion has energy. You will feel the power that comes from focusing on what excites you. </strong></span>Then, you can use that burst of energy or excitement to move you through those things that hold you back from what you want. There will always be obstacles that try to get in the way of your happiness, so keep the big picture in view! When you need that bit of motivation to get you past the small stuff, remember what fires you up. Whether or not YOU love yoga, when you find a style and teacher that suits your lifestyle, you’ll tap into the answers of all life&#8217;s questions.</p>

Since 2006, we have enjoyed her presence at the studio and find it so rewarding to hear how positive a role the studio has played in her life. There has always been a sense of community and sincere interest in encouraging you as a person, to be in a healthy place for yourself. All the teachers help you to find confidence in yourself and to listen to your heart. What stands out the most for me, are all the messages I hear that bring serenity to the demands of daily life. Whether it is a poem, reading or thought for the day, each teacher has a wonderful way of expressing their wisdom. Tired of being tired? Yin your yang with stretches and yoga poses to find deep relaxation. During this afternoon, Michele will assist in <span style="color: #ffa500;"><strong>opening your mind and body </strong></span><span style="color: #ffa500;"><strong>by playing her Tibetan bowls and using aroma and colour therapy. </strong></span> These tools along with a series of yin postures will allow connective tissue to release in the hips, shoulders and neck, which will help you unwind and promote healing. Earlier this week he sang, &#8220;Five little monkeys, jumping in your head&#8221; and although it would sound like this tune was directed to a young child, in this case he was referring to me. I guess the multi-tasking of motherhood can make one look a little whimsical and somewhat indecisive. Let this be the confession of a yogi who admits that missing too many of those morning meditations and asana practices, has recently resulted in a bit of a &#8216;monkey mind&#8217;. This <strong><a style="color: #657d93; text-decoration: underline;" href="http://bodyharmonyyoga.createsend1.com/t/r/l/tjydlhy/utjhjyhhl/k/"><span style="color: #000080;">Buddhist</span></a></strong><span style="color: #000080;"> </span>term, is used in reference to a stream of thoughts that come and go without control. Thinking too much about the week ahead, all sorts of stories begin to surface. The &#8216;what if&#8217; and &#8216;how about&#8217; thoughts are classic and all humans experience these different mind energies. The ebb and flow of thoughts - both pleasant and unpleasant - are totally natural, but controllable and need not be troublesome.</p>
<p>Somehow I manage to stop everything, get outside to sit in the park, BREATHE and slow the thought patterns. The little one who just learned to crawl this week, falls asleep in the stroller beside me and I am gifted a moment to write this. The late afternoon sun feels heavenly and there is a realization that everything that needs to get done, eventually will. It may even be enjoyable. September along with every other month will come and go, and in the meantime I choose to smile and think, &#8220;No more monkeys jumping in my head&#8221;.</p>

Likely, the feeling would resemble that of a light feather. Surrendering to the moment and accepting &#8216;what actually is&#8217; invites a feeling of harmony within. A lack of ease or &#8216;dis-ease&#8217; creates illness in the mind and body. Since most of us aspire to feel harmony of mind and body, let&#8217;s embrace the concept that surrendering brings a wealth of health to ones being.</p>
<p>Learning to surrender takes practice though.
